Scooter saves family vacation!

Last November, my 88-year-old dad decided to go on vacation with us–a week at Walt Disney World and a week on the Disney Cruise Line.

We rented a scooter (also known as an ECV) from Scooter Vacations, and I can't praise them highly enough! Not only did they deliver a brand-new scooter to our rental home, but they took time to show us how it worked as well as how to "disassemble" the scooter so it could fit into the back of our rental minivan (we chose a scooter that could be folded/have the batteries removed specifically for ease of transportation).

My dad felt so much better about being able to get himself around and didn't feel like he was being a burden on anyone, requiring them to push a regular wheelchair. That independence was wonderful.

Having the scooter on the Disney Cruise Line was also great. My dad could get around the ship, which requires a lot of walking, without our assistance, and he really enjoyed that. Even at Castaway Cay, he could roll off the ship and park the scooter near the sand wheelchairs, which we used to push him out to the beach chairs, where he loved watching the grandkids play and swim. Despite having limited mobility, he was able to truly be part of that day and I think being there was even more special to him because of it.

When we were at sea, we had a slight problem with the scooter because of a fuse. Scooter Vacations was available by email and, using their suggestions, my husband and the Disney Magic's electrician were able to fix it quickly.

Because the scooter could be 'disassembled,' it went into the luggage compartment on Disney's bus transportation from Port Canaveral to the Orlando airport; I notified the Disney Cruise Line beforehand, and there were no problems whatsoever. The Scooter Vacations rep met us at the airport and picked up the scooter, which was really convenient.

Having a scooter for a member of the family who's not up to walking long distances helps tremendously to make a vacation successful!
